Many students express to me their wish of becoming a professional sportsperson–perhaps a cricketer, footballer or basketball player. Becoming a pro in the field of sports can be one of the most incredibly rewarding careers, however the majority of those who dream of reaching the field and getting paid to do so never manage to achieve their dream.
There are two reasons why:
1. The individual does not have the raw ability.
2. Even if he has the raw ability, the individual does not have the discipline.
Before you go too far in leading yourself down a dead end, chasing a dream that will never come true (and facing a LOT of disappointment later on), I suggest you do the following:
First find out if you really have the inner potential to become a world level player. That you can figure out by considering the following:
- Are you the best player in your school? District? State?
- Do you play or practice 5-6 hours per day?
- Have your coaches told you that you have the talent to become a professional player?
If the answer is yes to all these, you have a small small chance at success as a pro. In this case you would need to answer these questions:
- Do you have the full support of parents, family and school to pursue sports as a profession?
- Can you get into a top level sports academy?
- Would you be able to be one of the top players there?
- Are you prepared to wake up daily at 4am or 5am to get out for practice, and put in 7-8 hours of practice per day, in addition to your school studies.
If the answer is no to the questions above, then the answer is it’s likely a dream that will never come true.
Keep in mind, that while you might not have what it takes in ability or discipline to be come a professional sportsperson, that doesn’t mean you can’t utilize your sports-related strengths and abilities in a career that brings you happiness and success. People who are strong in Bodily Intelligence and Adventurous Nature (required for sportspeople) can go on to use their talents in the following professions:
- Adventure Sports Instructor
- Fitness Trainer
- Sports Coach
- Military Professional
- Police Officer
- Travel Guide
- Body Guard
And in cases where you can’t connect these qualities to your profession, you can always engaged in sports in your free time–after work or on weekends.
No one can ever take away your opportunities to get onto the field for the rest of your life. But before you fantasize too far, it’s important for you to be realistic with yourself about whether or not you have what it takes in terms of ability or discipline to earn your bread and butter by playing sports.
